You could say that John knew Jesus better than any of the other disciples. John and Jesus had a brotherly friendship love for each other. So devoted was John to Jesus that he was the only disciple the Bible mentions was present at Jesus' crucifixion.
This devotion continued after the ascension of Jesus and the early ministry of the Church. John’s passion for the gospel is what leads him to be exiled to the Island of Patmos. The Authorities thought they had silenced missionary passion and his witness by putting him on this remote rock, of course they failed. John was so devoted, that even though there was no other one there, he was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day (empty church). In this quiet place he was free to focus on Jesus who had changed his life by Galilee years before. He wrote of His experience in Revelation 1: 9-11
Revelation 1:9-11 I, John, your brother and fellow partaker in the tribulation and kingdom and perseverance which are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like the sound of a trumpet, saying, "Write in a book what you see, and send it to the seven churches:”
