He shoots - He Scores!

I want to confess something. I have been late to work recently. It is because I have been captivated by the World Cup. I don’t know what it is, but I get to watching the games in the morning and I can’t stop. I think it’s because there are few commercial breaks. There is no way for you to get up the action is non-stop. It, like baseball, is a game of strategy and skill. When they score it is phenomenal, especially if they score using their head. I am becoming a soccer enthusiast, not a fan yet but I do enjoy the world cup game.

It is a team game where all the parts work together to score a goal. It is an individual sport where each player must play his part, or the team loses. There are those who are better at certain parts of the game, but everyone must work passing and getting in the zone for an attempt at a score. Then there is the goalie who must keep on his toes even when the ball is down field because in a second it could be back at his doorstep. The coach must use his own had signals to tell the team what he wants them to do. There are rules and you can’t just go out there kicking everyone in the shin.

You know I am going to have to make this relate to the church – which to me isn’t hard. In a Church everyone has their own skills and uses them for the common goal. Paul says in 1st Corinthians 12: 4-6 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Each one does their part whether it is passing, setting up the goal, or keeping the other team from making a goal happen. The coach has trained us and put us on the field to do what he wants done so that his team can score. Often, we are the lone goalie making sure the powers of the advisory don’t get one past us. We must pay attention to the “game” and be ready to be on offense or defense depending on where the ball is in play.

I will continue to watch the World Cup this Summer. It is fun to find God and his work in places where you wouldn’t always expect him. Ask God to open your soul to where he wants you to play in the team at North Irving Baptist. We have a large crowd of fans (witnesses) in Heaven who are cheering us on. Let’s play to win.
